JE-QUARANTINE/BM JE FARM QUARANTINE LAWS TO BE GAZETTED SOON

GEORGE TOWN,Pig farms in the state found positive with JE virus in animal blood samples will be
quarantined, said state Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Rural Development and Health Committee
chairman Dr Afif Bahardin.
He said the Penang state government would be issuing a disease gazette as found in the Animals Act
1953 and the Animal Order (Encephalitis Viral Disease Control) 1999 that would be announced by Chief
Minister Lim Guan Eng should the blood sample tests were found positive for JE.
"The state government takes a serious view of the exposure to Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus in the
country. We will take preventive measures to stop the virus from spreading.
"The state government is giving full commitment to overcome the problem and will work with municipal
councils, state Health Department and the Department of Veterinary Services," he told a press conference
here today. He said vector control of mosquito had begun since a JE case was announced.

Dr Afif said the state government was also worried with the Health Ministry's procedure of not informing
on the spread of the virus infection from the start. "I am urging Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam
to investigate the matter and carry out the necessary action to protect the health of the people," he said.
Three JE cases have been reported in the state involving two children and a man.The two children, Muhammad Ammar Muqrish Zulkifli, 12, of SK Kampung Selamat was being treated at a private hospital here and a girl, aged two years and five months, Norain Nasuha Shukri was being treated at Penang Hospital. Dr Afif said the first adult case, involving an 18-year-old man, in Lorong Seratus Tahun here was recovering. He also advised people having symptoms such as prolonged fever, dizziness, vomiting or headache to seek medical attention.
