GEORGE TOWN,The Health Ministry has called on local authorities in every state to monitor waste contractors to ensure proper management of solid waste to fight the spurge of dengue.Deputy Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Hilmi Yahaya said the ministry's observations so far found many dengue localities were experiencing poor rubbish collection service, which resulted in the breeding of aedes mosquitoes."In these areas, garbage were left to pile up and remained uncollected for days. Local authorities should monitor their waste contractors to ensure that all solid waste were collected as schedule."He said this to reporters after attending Puteri Umno 'Cahaya Lebaran' programme to buy Hari Raya clothes for less-fortunate children here today. Dr Hilmi also called on the Communication for Behavioural Change Impact (Combi) groups to play their roles in assisting the government to gain public support for dengue prevention activities. He said the rate of dengue infection was low when Combi squads were active and to date about 2,000 of such groups had been registered through residents' associations nationwide.Between January to July 17 this year, 50,804 dengue cases were reported throughout the country, an increase of 36,222 cases or 248 per cent compared to
14,582 cases for the same period last year, he added.
