KUALA LUMPUR,BP Hearing Solutions (BPHS), with the largest network of over 50 hearing centres in Malaysia, plans to strengthen its leadership position by growing its presence in the manufacturing industry where hearing loss has become the most common work-related illness. The company launched in 2012 by Malaysia’s largest private healthcare provider, BP Healthcare Group, is already one of the hearing solutions centre approved by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) under the Ministry of Human Resources.
Based on DOSH statistics, noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) tops the list of occupational diseases in 2012 with 956 cases, mostly reported in the manufacturing sector. It is common among workers in textile plants, and basic metal, chemical beverages and non-metallic mineral product industries.“Often undiagnosed and gradual, hearing loss can greatly impact on worker productivity and a person’s quality of life. A comprehensive hearing screening is important especially when you work in a noisy environment, ignoring the problem can only make it worse,” said BPHS Chief Executive Officer Mr Joevy Beh.
“In the past few years, we have worked very hard to build our presence and make hearing tests more affordable and accessible to industries and the general public. Apart from our professional and customised service to walk-in and retail customers, we launched various initiatives such as online testing, mobile hearing screening and installed kiosks in strategic locations to allow people to test themselves.”The company’s audiology services include hearing screening, diagnostic tests, occupational noise mapping, personal noise exposure monitoring, hearing aid evaluation, and hearing aid fittings and sales.
BPHS was the first to conduct mobile hearing screening approved by DOSH, using the Mobile Diagnostic Centre owned by BP Healthcare Group to provide medical screening services at community events and to visit factories to help them comply with occupational health surveillance.
Those who choose online hearing test can immediately make appointments online for a consultation with an ENT (ear, nose and throat) specialist or audiologist, if hearing loss is suspected. Mr Beh said BPHS had the advantage of tapping into the 30-year medical and operational strength of its parent company which has over 100 branches
throughout the country that are open 365 days a year. BP Healthcare was awarded for the second straight year as the Health Screening Company of the Year by Frost & Sullivan at its 2014 Malaysia Excellence Awards. Hearing screening is also included in BP Healthcare’s flagship Head2Toe comprehensive health screening programme.
“The strengthening of BP Hearing Solutions will also boost our position as the exclusive distributor in Malaysia and Brunei for Beltone, one of the world’s largest manufacturing of hearing devices. We have sold over 10,000 hearing devices and were awarded Best Performance within Global Distributor Sales in 2013 by Beltone,” Mr Beh added. In 2012, BPHS established a smart partnership with Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia to collaborate in the audiology field.
